Nov. 2009 ASAV Horses going to Qatar:
After many months of negotiations, three Shagyas belonging to ASAV members were on their way to Qatar.
The horses are SA Ireesh Tenor (Bayram x SA Ireesh Lullaby ox), SA Edashick (Bayam x SA Enif ox) belonging to Dauuna Sellers, our ASAV registrar, who lives in Verona, KY and Nadjsha IDA* (Lenkoran II x N’Obaya*) belonging to Denis and Irmi Atam.

Jeremy Olson and his working/riding partner, Ellen Rapp, were the organizers of this project. Shortly before Thanksgiving, the three horses boarded an International transport out of Chicago with their final destination, Qatar.

Charles Phillips Memorial Versatility Award 2009

SA Te Jat is the UMECRA Versatility Reserve Champion!

Since Charles began distance riding he was consistently one of the top competitors. His first horse, Whitney, completed over 1,000 miles under sanctioned competition. His second horse, J Dalmaar Sharri+/, completed over 2,600 miles under sanctioned competition and finished in the Top Ten every year Charles competed with her.

One of Charles' favorite things was going for the AHDRA Versatility Award, which he won a number of times (with both horses). Charles also introduced numerous people to the sport of competitive and endurance riding and was on both UMECRA's and GLDRA's mentors lists.

Mentoring new riders keeps our sport going and is a significant way of giving back to competitive and endurance riding. Charles served on the GLDRA Board for several years and volunteered many hours setting up a database for points and mileage and designing and updating our website. On the trail, Charles always displayed courtesy, leadership, and a genuine concern for other riders. These characteristics culminated in his receipt of the GLDRA Sportsmanship Award. Charles was a great asset to our sport, consistently helping our organizations through his hard work, enthusiasm and love of the sport.

For these reasons, GLDRA decided to sponsor this award in honor of Charles. Unfortunately, Charles lost his battle with pancreatic cancer on May 16, 2008 and will not be with us to see the first awards given out. You can be sure that Charles would be proud of all those who tried for this award and, if he were here, he would have been one of the biggest contenders!

This is a picture of Lily Creek Ciara (grey mare) and Lily Creek Divine Journey. She was born in April. Her mother (who now resides in Canada) is my mares half sister. How awesome is that for a family affair. My mare (the grey) Ciara has adopted her into her heart as have I!!
Oh and yes she will be grey!!

Kudos to the breeder Donna Coss for these lovely horses!

The KY Cup: The two Shagyas in the 100/75 are US bred horses, Fayette De Cameo and SA Belshazzar. Fayette De Cameo was pulled due to the KY mud and sloop that eliminated a lot of the horses and riders at this event. Zar being a KY bred horse finished 20th.

I was very proud of him as this is his first year of doing endurance. He would have finished higher but the vet tent did him in. Too many flags, wires, loud speaker etc. His first presentation, first loop he was 3rd. When he saw and heard everything in the tent, it made his heart rate shoot up. You only get two chances to present and one was gone, so Jeremy held him for 15 minutes and the next round in the vet tent went very well and also in all the rest of the loops. But of course put him out of the front runners.

In this race we had a 50% completion rate for the Shagya horses, but a much higher pull rate for the horses overall. Over 60-70 horses started and 31 finished. I believe my numbers are close to correct.

In the 75 the two Shagya's were flown in by the UAE and were ridden by Spanish riders. Both finished in the top five. 100% completion rate.

The KY Cup was quite an experience and next year it will be double the pressure on the horses and riders.

Go, Go, Go Marty and Chris Power!
Another top ride with Shagya horses competing for National top honors. Two weeks ago the KY Cup had four of our wonderful horses running for international ribbons. Now, on Oct 28-29th in OK, Marty Power on SA Te Jat (Bayram x SA Enif ox) and Chris Power on WineGlass Debonaire (Budapest x WineGlass Darnefti ox) will be competing for the top ribbons.

Lily Creek Dancin, did her very first AERC ride EVER at Fort Valley, VA. this weekend (10/24). A 30 mile ride, very rocky and difficult terrain. Her husband crewed, either one had ever been to a ride, but out of 36 entries, DANCIN came in fifth and received all A's. She was evidently properly conditioned, as her owner lives on a mountain in southern Virginia and she had been riding her all spring and summer.

Five ASAV members packed camping gear, saddles, bridles and girths for 5 horses and traveled to Caesar's Creek Horseman's campground to ride the Novice CTR offered in the Abi Khan Challenge on Sunday Aug 30th.

We had three horses that had never been to anything like a ride with all the horses and trailers etc. They were fine.

Romany, SA Grux (Bayram's get) and Dagwood (a young TWer). I rode Vega for miles only.

Elisha Morehead rode SA Grux, Kathy Papp rode Romany, Cassie Ackley rode Dagwood, and Shulah rode Misty (QH paint).

We had a lot of fun and got lots of prizes even though we were not top ten placers.

Becky McCarty rode WineGlass Dominus and won the two day light weight division, completing 50 miles.

Diann Marksberry came up to see how SA Grux (her horse) was doing.

She took lots of pictures.

Aug. 2009 Daunna Sellers (on behalf of Jeremy Olson):

Ellyn rode Ireesh. She left the last vet check 4 minutes behind Val Kanavy and caught her on the last loop. We had already decided we were not going to race her off as the trail was muddy and slick and it was not a good finish anyway. We just followed her in with a nice second place finish. We did not want to risk hurting him. The time was fast and he checked very good at every check. It was his best ride yet as he was calm and relaxed on the trail and in the check. Ireesh was a machine all day long. It was a 60 mile ride and he looked awesome at the end, a pretty great day for him. Te Jat looked good as well, he was middle of the pack and finished real strong.

Aug. 2009 Marty Powers:

We had a wonderful weekend at the Wildcat ride. I rode the 50 mile ride on Friday with two very experienced endurance riders who’ve done lots of 100’s, National ride, etc. We rode together the entire ride and all three horses were doing well at the end so we decided to draw straws for our finish placing rather than race in on a gravel road. I drew second place (not bad since I probably would have gotten lost without them) and Te got BC!!! That’s two rides in a row he’s been awarded BC. If I’m reading the BC score sheet correctly we did the ride in 5 hours and 2 minutes which means we averaged 10 miles an hour. Te looked fabulous at the end, but I decided not to ride on Sunday. I really want to finish the season with 3000 UMECRA miles, so I don’t want to push too hard at this point in the season and mess things up.

July 2009 Donna Coss:

STETSON finally did his first 55 mile ride~ that ended up 61 miles~ as his rider missed a trail marker. He still ended up in top ten with 27 horses competing. He showed no fatigue and was in fine shape, so will probably do a hundred some time this year. He is proving to be a very competitive Shagya. This ride was in Lynchberg, SC and was a NIGHT ride, so in the dark without any moonlight to see by. Stetson had the GLOVES on his front feet and back feet were bare. Brian has never put steel shoes on him. Stetson's son, LC Nobelest, is at Ft. Stanton this weekend doing a two or three day ride. Nobelest, owned by Michael Elias is also planning on Nobel doing his first 100 this year. I have a four year old Anglo Shagya mare, a Dante daughter, who is just under saddle and she is very forward and athletic. Should do well in endurance! She is also very pretty with good conformation! And a sweetheart!

July 2009 Daunna Sellers:
On July 24, 2009, the Jr Young Riders will race 75 miles to find the best young endurance rider in the nation. The race will be held on the same trails where the 2008 AERC national championship was run. The Jr. Young Riders from across the North American Continent will converge on Lexington, KY to compete in the FEI riding disciplines. Endurance was added in 2008.
This is close to Darlene Steven and me and ASAV will have some sort of refreshments for the youth at the home based camp. There is also a rumor that a Shagya will be running in the 75 mile ride.

Greenway FEI Endurance Ride: Sa Belshazzar, SA Ireesh Tenor and SA Edashick Hello all, I just thought I would give you guys an update as to how some of our Shagya's are doing in Endurance so far this year. I rode SA Belshazzar in the FEI 75 at the Greenway Ride last Saturday in Florida. Zar and I won the ride and also received the Best Condition Award!!! He is an awesome horse and he was very strong all day long. The last 10 miles we were all alone and he was still very forward and finished very very strong. Zar will do the FEI 100 at FITS Ellyn rode Sa Ireesh Tenor in the FEI 50 mile ride and placed second!! He had another awesome day and was very strong. Ellyn did not sprint for the win as she wanted a strong finish to keep him healthy and strong for the FEI 75 at the FITS ride in 5 weeks. We had a friend ride SA Edashick in her second 50 and she finished strong as well. She placed 18th and looked as fresh at the end as she did in the beginning. They started the 50 mile ride at noon, so Eda also got her first experience at night riding!! Now when she does her first 100 she will be an old hand at it. Eda will do the FEI 50 at FITS. Thanks again Daunna for breeding these wonderful horses!! We will keep spreading the Shagya word around so they become more popular in endurance....

June 2009 Donna Coss / Brian Coss:
Last Sunday, Lily Creek Stetson, was the first Shagya Arabian to actually make his appearance at the Hungarian Embassy in Washington DC. He was a big hit with the crowd there and Beata Coss, in her native Hungarian language, was able to answer the numerous questions by the admiring and curious crowd that gathered around.
"Stetson" is winning converts all over the northern Virginian area, as he and his owner, Brian Coss, have traveled many miles, training for his endurance career. They are scheduled for the Old Dominion ride on June 12th, which will be his second ride this year. They finished his first 30 mile AERC ride in April, finishing in the top ten with about 43 entries.
Stetson is always the perfect gentleman and quite the ambassador for the breed. He is also the first Shagya to cross train at a SWIM CAMP. He was there for a week awhile ago. Brian states, "he is developing a good back stroke"!!

I finally have the new Oman DVD’s ready. Your Oman offspring or related horses are included and it is really awesome to see them as part of Oman’s legacy. If it weren’t for your photos and breedings or purchases of Oman Offspring, we wouldn’t have all these photos. I wish that I could offer the DVD’s as a gift but the cost to have the professional work done, cost more than I expected. But, the final product is really worth it. There are several folders with in the DVD that you can click on to open. They include a complete video section with many photos of Oman, Oman’s Sire, Grandsires and several full brothers competing in Germany, etc. Also folders of Oman showing in dressage, trail competition, the complete ISR 100-day Stallion Testing and finally a folder of many offspring, grand-get and great grand-get doing all sorts of different things. Also included are photos of the original U.S. Senior Shagya Stallions. The DVD is priced at just $15.00 to help defray the production costs. The DVD’s should be a must for anyone with Oman offspring or anyone interested in studying about Shagya Arabian type. I’m hoping you will be interested in purchasing one and in passing on the news about the availability of the DVD’s. I’ve also asked Kilian Dill to please send out an email to ASAV members. You’ll really have fun seeing yourselves, your horses or horses that you know. Most of the photos are fun photos that you most likely forgot all about!! J I’m sure there will be many that I have missed and that is always difficult with this big of a project. But, at least we have what we have and it is all a tribute to Oman in America. Please send the $15.00 along with a correct return address. I don’t want to use an address that I may have that could be in-correct. I could really use some help getting the word out about the DVD’s. Thanks Very Much!
